DRIVER FATALITY RATES FOR THE BEST AND WORST 2011 VEHICLES

and their corresponding crash ratings

.

NOTE THE STRONG CORRELATION:
.
LIGHT-WEIGHT VEHICLES WITH BELOW-AVERAGE CRASH TEST RATINGS
GENERALLY HAVE THE HIGHEST FATALITY RATES WHEREAS VEHICLES THAT ARE HEAVIER AND HAVE ABOVE-AVERAGE CRASH TEST RATINGS GENERALLY RESULT IN THE LOWEST FATALITY RATES.

(*) The relative weight of a vehicle compared with one it collides with in a head-on crash is a critical determinant of the forces the occupants are subjected to, however neither vehicle size or weight are evaluated in crash test ratings and must be evaluated separately. The compatibility fatality factor is the ratio of the driver fatality rate for a vehicle based on its size/weight versus the average driver fatality rate for 3,200 lb. passenger cars.

Since the introduction of seat belts and airbags the most significant life-saving technologies for automobiles have been ESC (Electronic Stability Control)—mandatory standard equipment commencing with model-year 2012, and side-curtain airbags. For many years manufacturers offered this equipment only as optional equipment, so be certain the vehicle you choose incorporates them. Click here to see list of vehicles with this equipment.
